I really enjoy building pinewood derby cars, and looking at pictures of cars built by other folks. Car design options are virtually unlimited, and designers have certainly come up with some wonderful vehicles. In fact, I am continually amazed at the creativity of people, especially since I tend to be more of a 'straight line' type of person. As an example, there is a posting of a car on the DerbyTalk Forum (look under car photos) that looks like an aquarium on wheels. It looks very real! If you are like me, and enjoy looking at photos of cars, check out the sites listed at the end of this journal entry.
But I guess I really shouldn't be so amazed at the creativity of people. We are told that our creator made us in His own image1. So certainly a little of God's wonderful creativity should have been imparted to us! And clearly he is creative.
Just consider for a moment the extraordinary diversity of animal and plant life on this planet. The creativity (and in fact the extravagance) of nature is evident2. Who, other than God, would have thought of the Hippopotamus - a land mammal that prefers to live in water. Or how about the elephant, with it’s trunk that is so agile it can pluck a blade of grass. Then there is the Platypus, a mammal that is truly difficult to classify! And even the insects, which are seemingly simpler in nature than the mammals, are marvels of design. How the bees and ants can work together in harmony is truly amazing.
In the Bible we are taught that God's creativity is evident by the creation itself: "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse3." When one considers (with an open mind) the design of even the simplest of cells, the need for a designer/creator is clearly evident.
At your next pinewood derby race, take a close look at the cars. Some will certainly stand out as unique and creative, and it will be clear to you that they were designed by a person(s). In a similar way, the next time you are outside; take a close look at nature - even if it is just in your back yard. I am confident that there too, you will witness the creativity of a designer.
