Pinewood derby racing is my business, so I oftentimes find parallels between derby racing and other aspects of life. Today was no different. As I was reading some passages from the Bible(1) I noticed how our life is compared to a race. We are told:

- to run by the rules so that we are not disqualified.

- to run with endurance, not giving up before the finish.

- to stay on the real track, which is straight and narrow. Many choose a much easier course.

- to run, not halfheartedly, but in such a way as to win.

We should take these principles to heart not only for our lives, but also for our pursuits. Clearly, these principles apply to pinewood derby racing.

- We must abide by the rules, or be disqualified before we start. Too often car builders don't read the rules, and are surprised and chagrined at the registration and weigh-in.

- We must make sure that our car can continue to race at top speed for many heats.

- We must recognize that the course is straight and narrow, and build our car to follow the course like an arrow to its target.

- We must put our best effort into designing and building the car. This certainly doesn't guarantee a trophy. But it increases the possibility, and - in my mind - guarantees success. To me success is giving your all and having fun in the process.

I encourage you to take the straight and narrow way to find victory in your life, and to achieve success (and victory) in your pinewood race.
