Are you building a pinewood derby car with a Royal Rangers kit, or does your club use a kit from S&W Crafts? These kits use a dowel rod and screw axle system. Unfortunately, the pilot hole for the screw axle is not always drilled exactly in the center of the dowel rod, which leads to alignment problems.

A solution is to plug the existing pilot holes using round toothpicks and white glue, then re-drilling the holes. However, re-drilling the holes is not particularly easy, and it is likely that the holes will still be off center.

However, there is a tool available to help with this task. The tool is a drilling guide which ensures that the drill bit stays in the exact center of the dowel.
