As mentioned in the previous entry, I hope that pinewood derby racing continues to thrive. But with the aging population, some effort will need to be made to ensure the long term popularity of the event. Here are some of my thoughts on lengthening the current interest in pinewood derby racing.
First, children's organization such as BSA, Awana, et al, must seek to gain members from the ever growing ethic communities, especially the Hispanic community.
Next, adults that enjoy the hobby must organize races for children or adults at the neighborhood, church, or club level. I know of several annual neighborhood and club races that are target at adults. They generate a lot of interest. Corporate sponsored races are also popular.
Finally, organizations that sponsor races need to use high-quality kits (square slots, good wheels, etc.). Poor quality kits are a deterrent to active participation as they frustrate parents and children alike. Organizations also need to provide clear rules, basic information, and access to tools to maximize participation in the event.
Certainly there are other ways to strengthen pinewood derby racing. Let me know your ideas.
